Iganga, 20th /February/2014; Court in Iganga has formally started hearing the case in which Solomon Hamala -a journalist with Red Pepper Publications was allegedly assaulted by Kemba Azizi and Isiko Yakubu both attached to Accurate Security Services Ltd.
The complainant Hamala Solomon appeared before Her Worship Sheila Nvannungi and gave his testimony. Court asked Kemba to cross-examine him, but which he failed to do.
The prosecution led by Jagenda Davis, a police prosecutor tendered in exhibits to wit: photos indicating the state in which the journalist was after he was assaulted and the medical form. These were presented for identification purposes pending testimonies from the police surgeon who carried out the medical examination and the photographer. The state prosecutor Lydia Katami who was in personal conduct of the case could not prosecute the case as she had other cases before the High Court in Iganga District.
The matter was adjourned to 27th February 2014 for further testimonies from the prosecution witnesses.
The journalist was covering a story of a demonstration by Iganga kiosk owners contesting the intended demolition of their kiosks by the Iganga Municipal Council authorities when he was allegedly assaulted by Kemba Azizi and Isiko Yakubu who is still at large.
“We are happy that this matter is being handled expeditiously. However we appeal to the police to in Iganga to intensify the search for the other suspect, Isiko, who has eluded arrest twice.” Siad HRNJ-Uganda National Coordinator, Robert Ssempala.
